Hooded Merganser

Lophodytes cucullatus

"A striking soul with a mysterious depth"

You favored birds with haunting calls and solitary intensity like the Loon and Saw-whet, yet your warm smile and library-filled home suggest a grounded, intellectual richness. The Hooded Merganser matches this blend of striking, crest-adorned style and a preference for calm, emotionally deep waters. While you passed on the frantic energy of kingbirds, you share the Merganser's quiet, observant presence and unique, artistic flair.

A note on your bird: it wasn't picked from the 10 you swiped through — those were just the warm-up. It was chosen from our full flock of 100 iconic Canadian birds, matching the pattern of what moved you. That's why it may be one you never met on your journey.
